Numurkah & Wunghnu 150-Year Celebration
This year, Numurkah and Wunghnu communities are commemorating a significant milestone - 150 years since their proclamation as towns in 1875. This milestone serves as the central theme for the 2025 Numurkah Show.
The 150th anniversary logo for Numurkah and Wunghnu, crafted by local design studio Ink Squirrel, is a vibrant tribute to the region's rich history and community spirit. Drawing inspiration from artwork created by local school students in 2023, the logo encapsulates key elements that have shaped the towns over the past 150 years.
Central to the design are the Broken and Nine Mile Creeks, symbolizing the natural waterways integral to the area's landscape. The depiction of early bushland and scrub reflects the native vegetation that characterised the region before agricultural development. The inclusion of wheat fields represents the early farming practices, particularly wheat cultivation, that played a significant role in the towns' growth. The arrival of the railway in 1881 is also featured, marking a pivotal moment that enhanced connectivity and economic development in the area*.
A notable aspect of the logo is its reference to Indigenous art, acknowledging that the land was inhabited long before the towns' proclamations in 1875. This element honours the Bangerang clan, part of the Yorta Yorta Nation, who are the traditional custodians of the land*.
This emblem serves not only as a celebration of Numurkah and Wunghnu's 150-year journey but also as a visual narrative that honours the natural, cultural, and historical heritage of the region.
